A Letter to 2009

Dear 2009,

I wrote a similar letter to my lover, 2008, last year. We had quite a bad break up, you see. I was annoyed with 2008 and I was tired of the.. well… shit that came along with 2008. He was that sorta like The Kardishans; interesting at first but then just plain and fucking annoying later on.

But, 2009, this letter is not about 2008. It is about you. I had high hopes for you my dear. I had hoped you would be better than 2008; a new chapter, a new life.

And I will not lie to you my dear. You had your moments.There were days where you embraced me, and smiled upon me so vividly, that my soul smiled with you. My soul laughed and my heart beat with no worry, because I knew that you were there to treat me well.  You made sure that my family smiled, you made sure that I got to a good start at uni and hey, you made sure Pakistani won the Twenty20 Cup. Life was good.

But you were also terrifying 2009. You strongly reminded me of 2008;  turning into a violent man, making me scared, revolted, and broken. You are soaked with the blood of the innocent lives from Pakistan, Iran, Palestine, Zimbabwe.. I could go on. The financial world pretty much collapsed with you, creating unemployment and poverty. Fathers had to go back home, with their heads lowered, trying to figure out how to tell their children that from now on, things had to be different.

And then you killed Michael Jackson. I mean, for God’s sake, Michael Jackson.  By then I had realised that your priorities were a bit misplaced. Anyone who decides to kill off Michael Jackson instead of, ooooh,  Sean Hannity, is an idiot. And instead of apologizing you kill Brittney Murphy? Jerk

And then you killed brain cells by bringing Bollywood to Hollywood (or Hollywood to Bollywood). You are obviously a very, very terrible matchmaker. Anyone knows that Bollywood and Hollywood is a marriage bound to go wrong. Thanks to you, now I can’t even watch an Indian movie without feeling I’m watching some amateur porn movie. Do I really wanna see Kareena Kapoor ride Saif Ali Khan? I’m sorry, but I am sure Sharon Stone has that covered.

Speaking of Hollywood, you son-of-bitch, you turned beauty from Beyonce to Megan Fox. I am sorry 2009, but I can’t walk around as if I can’t close my lips, have a 20 inch waist and say ”I’m not even a back-door virgin”.  I just can’t okay? Just like I can’t weigh 50 kg, have double Ds and be 178 cm tall. I don’t think men can be 190 cm, have 10 pacs AND be able to cook at the same time either. You set some serious high standards, and it’s killing the rest of us, okay?  

But as I said, you had your moments. The Oscar opening was one of them. Closing that damn Amanda Knox case was also one of them. The Swiss vote on the minaret ban was not, but it just proved what bullshit direct democracy is so I guess it was a good moment too.  And, who can forget Lady Gaga? You actually, now that I think of it, apologized for the Megan Fox thing by proving that a girl who isn’t going to make it on the FHM list can actually be super rich, super famous AND regard herself sexy anyway.

But I think it is time for me to move on. 2010 doesn’t seem more promising than you, but at least he seems a bit more optimistic. 2010 will be a new chapter in my life. But I will not forget you 2009. You, like 2008 and all the rest, are a chapter in my life. A chapter that is vital to my story and to my life.

So let us part, 2009, with bittersweet memories and I hope you go down as well with your other partners (what did you think I was putting you out for?). I know men and women that you have dated will be either pleased or pissed off with you.

I am content.

Goodbye 2009.  It was, at the end of the day, a pleasure knowing you.

Bips Angry On Rohit Shetty

2009 Diwali was a surprise to all the Bollywood audience. Three movies were competed at the Box Office on that day. Blue , Main Aur Mrs Khanna and All The Best are those three movies. No one considered All The Best. Every one felt that, the competition is between Blue and Main Aur Mrs Khanna only. Because both the movies are high budget ventures and came with high technical values and never seen back drops at the same time has crazy stars. Pre-release high expectations was there on both of them.

Until the release day, many people even don’t know about All The Best. But it stood in first position at the Box Office. With fresh comedy scenes and tight screenplay it has beaten the remaining two movies.

in All The Best Sanjay Dutt, Fardeen Khan, Ajay Devgan and Mugdha Godse were played the lead roles. Bipasha Basu has appeared in dual role. After watching the movie success. Rohit Shetty has announced the sequel to it. By diwali 2010 it will hit the theaters.

Rohit Shetty is going to replace Bipasha Basu with any other heroine. Bips is not happy with this news. Its common in Bollywood, directors may not considers the same heroine in sequel. But Rohit Shetty has opted Kareena Kapoor for Golmaal 3 who has acted in second part in Golmaal series also. This is also one reason behind Bips angry.

Bollywood actress linked to Tiger Woods?

Examiner.com and DailyLatestNews.com both report a Bollywood actress is allegedly linked to Tiger Woods.

Lara Dutta, a famous Indian Bollywood actress and a former Miss Universe was rumored to be linked to Woods in 2001. At the time Woods denied the claim.

It was a rumor in 2001 and presently in 2009 but still worth mentioning amidst Woods’ other women.

Love Sex Aur Dhoka - First Look

Cinema is said to be the mirror of the society, to contain this definition, cinema needs to be thoughtful and creative else the essence will be lost. Every year bollywood makes 100’s of films but the success percent is meagerly 1%. Reason, directors think big budget, big stars, eye candy locations and some beautiful songs are the recipe of a successful film and they live it every Friday without remorse.

However, every year the surprise element comes in the shape of low budget films, keeping the essence of creative cinema, be it ‘A Wednesday’, Welcome to Sajjanpur and the list is not so big yet are good in numbers. Expectedly in 2010 we get to see Dibakar Banarjee’s ‘Love Sex Aur Dhoka’, another movie of the same clan.

Dibakar Banarjee is one of the directors who is cut above the rest when it comes to the creative cinema, the ad director when made ‘Khosla ka Ghosla’ no one expected it to work well, forget wonders. The next venture ‘Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! cemented him as an ace director and comparisons were made to Hrishikesh Mukherjee.

Now, Dibakar is ready with another ‘meaningful’ cinema ‘Love Sex Aur Dhoka’ no wonders if the film hypnotizes the ‘multiplex’ goers once again.

Priyanka Chopra - The Queen of Bollywood

Many people know tends to Bollywood, Aishwarya Rai, as the queen of Bollywood, but the fans think of Bollywood, knows the truth. When Aamir is undercover, not everyone recognises him, and some don’t know who he is even out of disguise. This is one of my favorites so far with Aamir-ji in Tamil Nadu.  His tour guide, Lakshman, really has no idea about who Aamir is, even after he reveals himself.  Enjoy:

Lakshman, don’t make me come all the way to Tamil Nadu, all the way to that monument made from sirf ek pathhar and find you! Lakshman, I will have to give you a tight slap to the face for not knowing Aamir.  But since you do seem to know at least the story of Ghajini , I will not slap you.  I must say if I ever make it to Chennai, I will try and get Lakshman as a guide.

Funniest comeback in Bollywood!

Yeh Dosti Hum Nahin Todenge…. Who can forget this immortal song in Sholay with Jai and Veeru travelling the countryside? It was the first musical number in the blockbuster, where the two heroes burst into a rollicking ’song of the road,’ evoking the antics of Raj Kapoor’s ‘vagabond’ persona of the ’50s. The sidecar, was more than a prop, it was a protagonist that was witness and catalyst to a memorable screen friendship.

Years after Sholay happened, we found the awesome twosome, Munnabhai and Circuit come alive in Lage Raho Munnabhai. The song Bole Toh Bole Woh Kaisi Hogi Hai was probably Hirani’s way of paying a tribute to the Sholay number. After all, this film influenced a whole generation of young filmmakers.

Director Shaad Ali also followed suit in Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. Bobby Deol and Abhishek Bachchan, replicated the Sholay number with Dharmendra and Amitabh’s sons. Unfortunately, the sons didn’t seem to share the same chemistry as their illustrious fathers. The sidecar however, had taken on a sleeker new look.

Shaad Ali’s earlier film, Bunty Aur Babli, also had a scene where one saw Abhishek and Rani fleeing together on a sidecar. Possibly his fascination stems from the fact that he spent his early childhood in Kanpur and Lucknow, where these vehicles are still very popular.

Brace yourselves, for next week, the sidecar makes an appearance yet again in Dhamaal. But this time there are four lovable idiots occupying the machine. Riteish Deshmukh, Javed Jafferey, Arshad Warsi and Aashish Chowdhury seem to be having a blast. Let’s hope they pull off their heist successfully!

Pimp my cow in Karol Bagh!

Foreigners in India have a tendency to do weird things. The world around is just way to tempting with all the jugaad approach around and limitless opportunities not constrained by any rules – legal or whatsoever – one have to strictly obey. Impossible is nothing (although what’s easy and seem obvious is usually quite difficult – but that’s a different story).

I guess this what I love the most about this wicked country. The limit is your imagination.

From my own experience – definitely organizing unofficial open championships in Cycle Rickshaw Racing would be shortlisted. You can check the video from this amazing event here .

But we didn’t push it quite as far as these two fellows, who decided to… buy over a cicle and ship it back to the Netherlands! Well – it’s not easy to stand out in terms of style on crowded Amsterdam bike roads, so I think brave Dutchies came up with just the right idea for a big time style manifesto, fantastic ice breaker and – after all – quite a good heartwinner…

There was also an awesome idea of customized hand painted bollywood poster style thanksgiving card made by Dave&Jenny, which is probably the most famous story of all expat stories in Delhi!

But what I came across today on Yuni-Net has just killed me. And reply – even more…

Rocket Singh - Salesman Of The Year Movie Review

Heart-warmer Of The Year

It’s a harsh truth that Bollywood, these days, is ruled by market forces where money is the name of the game. Films are showered with lots of so-called entertaining factors just to attract (or even fool) the masses in order to earn as much revenue as possible in the first three days.

In the midst of such a situation, it takes more than guts not to bow down to the bazaar demands make something right from your heart. Well, Shimit Amin’s Rocket Singh – Salesman Of The Year does the gutsy act and does it victoriously.

Rocket Singh is one of those flicks which reinforces your belief in the three assets called hope, hard work and honesty, which is almost non-existent in today’s movies. Harpreet Singh Bedi aka Rocket Singh (Ranbir Kapoor) has these assets in abundance instead of good marks to show off. He is one contended guy who has no interest in being in the ‘big’ profession of a doctor, engineer, MBA, etc. But little did he know that his assets will turn out to be the reason for his downfall. Despite this, Harpreet decides to fight back.

The presentation of this simple tale is equally simple. For this, Jaideep Sahni deserves tons of accolades for writing a heartwarming story, churning out some out-of-the-ordinary scenes in his screenplay and creating witty, funny as well as heart touching dialogues. In addition, Sahni’s honesty to the subject can be seen from the fact that he has refrained from giving undue importance to the romantic track or other such masala factors.

Add to this director Shimit Amin’s creativity, which can be seen in almost every scene. It’s because of his brilliance that the film turns out to be one of the most entertaining in recent times. In fact, Amin’s effort is at par with his last worshipped flick Chake De! India.

Playing the main lead in such a film is crucial and requires extraordinary talent and Ranbir Kapoor, with this performance, shows that he possesses extraordinary factor. The actor’s presence is enough to keep one glued to the screen as he expresses each emotion with ease.

Amongst the supporting cast, Gauhar Khan, Shazahn Padamsee, Prem Chopra and the actor who played the peon all perform their task perfectly. However, it’s D Santosh (the porn-watching IT guy Giri), the actor who played sales manager and the one who played Ranvir’s boss Puri who manage to surprise everyone with flawless and up to the mark performances, especially D Santosh.

Technical departments don’t disappoint too as Salim-Sulaiman’s amusing background score and Vikas Nowlakha’s apt cinematography suit the subject well. There’s isn’t much scope for Salim-Sulaiman’s music but the song Nikal Padi goes well with the post-interval situation apart from the hit promotional track Pocket Mein Rocket.

Considering everything, Rocket Singh – Salesman Of The Year is a rare gem which succeeds in bringing the spotlight back on honest, meaningful and non-masala cinema. Damn the average opening; the film’s makers and contributors have every reason to be proud.

REVIEW: Ramchand Pakistani

No, it isn’t another Khuda Ke Liye (that talked about innocent Muslims caught up in jail after 9/11) but no less in terms of storyline and making. For those who have been following the recent surge of films from Pakistan, watching Mehreen Jabbar’s debut, Ramchand Pakistani, is a moving experience.

Based on an accidental crossing of the India-Pakistan border, Ramchand Pakistani dwells upon the tragedy of hundreds of innocent people from both the countries who suffer in jails, while their devastated families helplessly wait for their return.

It was interesting to see the filmmaker’s attempt to stick to the true story, or so she claims. As it is pointed out at the very beginning that the film has also been shot in the some of the locations where the actual incident took place.

Mehreen Jabbar’s film features a host of Indian and Pakistani artistes. Produced by Mehreen’s father, Javed Jabbar, Ramchand Pakistani is a tale of a poor father and son belonging to Hindu dalit (untouchable) community. They live in the desert village of Bhimra near the Pakistan-India border. The story dates back to the year 2002 when tensions between the two countries flared up following an attack on the Indian Parliament.

It so happens that little eight-year-old Ramchand (Syed Fazal Hussain) unmindfully crosses the demarcated but open border into India. Shankar (Rashid Farooqui), Ramchand’s father follows to get him back. Unfortunately, they get arrested and put behind the bars by Indian security on suspicion of being spies. While the father and son spend five years in prison (with an older Ramchand being played by Navaid), the mother, Champa (Nandita Das), struggles at home, praying for their safe return.

Most of the actors in this film deserve credit for their fine performances. The child actor, Syed Fazal Hussain, playing the younger Ramchand, stands at par with his senior colleagues in his expressions – from childish curiosity, anger, fear, longing to plain jealousy – he does it all naturally. Nandita Das as a hapless mother and wife contemplating suicide and then holding herself back choosing to wait for her son, looks real for sure. But your heart goes out for the desperate father played by Rashid Farooqui who picks up a fight to save his child from a paedophile in the prison. Maria Wasti as Kamla, the feisty prison officer, who initially refuses to take care of Ramchand and later befriends him, is definitely worth a mention.

Certain frames in the film, like capturing the desert skyline of Thar in riveting wide shots, makes for a visual treat. The film has some heart wrenching moments as well. For example the love-hate relationship between the father and son is really touching.

While Khuda Kay Liye was refreshingly bold and non-formulaic, Mehreen’s Ramchand Pakistani runs more on the conventional lines. If one is looking for a hard-hitting film on the lives of innocent prisoners, this is not the one. Here the prison is a bit too clean, the guards are likeable, and the prisoners accept their unjust fate without complaining ever. The film stretches a bit too long in the middle, which takes away the charm for a while.

The soundtrack composed by Indian composer Debojyoti Mishra could have been better. The music, except for one song sung by Shubha Mudgal, fails to touch a chord.

VERDICT: A fine attempt with some noteworthy performances, Ramchand Pakistani is worth a watch.

Acting Workshop By Manoj Pahwa At Global Festival Of Films 2009

The well known actor and a performer in feature films like Wanted, Aaloo Chat, Sing Is King, Dhamaal ect. Manoj Pahwa gave acting tips to the students of Asian Academy Of Film And Television and Asian School Of Media Studies on his visit to the 2nd Global Festival of Documentary Films 2009 at Noida Film City.

A special workshop has been planned at Marwah Studios where students had the full privilege to interact and ask questions related to carrier in acting and how to manage the affairs in the Film and TV industry.

“We are happy that this kind of workshop could be planned during Global festival of films, this makes the whole festival more interesting and creative in its nature” said Sandeep Marwah, the president of Marwah Studios, a creative enterprises and the sponsors of Global Festival.

“I am feeling more elevated that I have been given this kind of duty in International event to guide the young group of actors, My relation with Marwah Studios is very long, when I started my carrier at Delhi” said Manoj Pahwa .

Later, the president of the festival Sandeep Marwah honoured Manoj Pahwa with the life membership of International Film And Television Club.

Nicolas Sarkozy 'helped' Roman Polanski get bail

The director’s sister-in-law Mathilde Seigner hinted that the leader has been instrumental to the recent development.

“I wouldn’t go so far as to say that it is thanks to the President that Roman has been freed, but he has been super. The President has been very effective,” Times Online quoted her as telling Le Parisien newspaper.

Joseph Wambaugh on Hollywood

For years now, I have been avid reader of Joseph Wambaugh – a policeman turned writer. His comedies, wrapped in (mostly) LA or (sometimes) New York milieu, are in the style of Raymond Chandler under halogen lamp. The darker areas get better light. The chrome glints more. Glamour quotient gets mixed with large doses of warmth and understanding. Unlike Chandler, Wambaugh’s is never judgmental – which make his characters very real.

I read Wambaugh’s Glitter Dome, and twenty years later I remember one of his interesting observations on Hollywood,

Hollywood, Bollywood (a patronizing name by which Indian film industry calls itself), haute couture businesses have a rather blase attitude about sex. Hence, to hold Hollywood to ordinary behavioural norms, has a puritanical air about it. In the Polanski affaire, the alleged victim, Samantha Geimer, wants the case closed.

But anyway, coming to why this story get me curious, is why did Anand Jon, a haute couture designer such a harsh sentence. Unwilling /semi-willing /actively willing sex in Hollywood /Bollywood /haute couture businesses is what (I have been given to believe is) normal. I mean these days, stars /starlets ‘leak’ sex tapes on the internet.

And no one has ever been seriously prosecuted, convicted and sentenced – as Anand Jon has been!

Where is the balance

I am assuming that Anand Jon is guilty. Is it the first time that models have tried advancing their career by sleeping with designers? Has it not happened before? I wonder what is it that Anand Jon did, which brought down the entire American judicial establishment onto him like ton of bricks. The case of the Sri Lankan Rajarathnam has similar smell to it.

The US prosecuting authority, the Preet Bharara, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, alleges that the Galleon Fund made some US$20 million out of this insider trading. I am sure that Galleon Fund (more than US$5 billion in assets under management) spent more than US$20 million on tea, coffee, espresso, soda, Evian and paper napkins. Rajrathnam’s own net worth was estimated by “Forbes” to be US$ 1.3 billion.

Is there any sense, any balance to these cases. Is Preet Bharara, indulging in reverse ‘affirmative action’ by prosecuting Rajarathnam? Is Preet Bharara trying to prove that he is colour blind?

“If you’re a wealthy trader, you aren’t special,” Bloomberg quoted Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara as saying at a press conference. “Knock on our door before we come knocking on yours.”

If you ask me, he should investigate Hank Paulson, the Former Treasury Secretary, under whose watch many bankruptcies happened conveniently in favour of JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs.
