Tweet Me Bollywood

Twitter is a phenomenon that people are yet to understand. The simplicity of it just baffles one’s mind. However, to bring to full potential, you really need to see it in use by a celebrity. In my case, I had almost always wondered if Bollywood could ever present itself as joining the bandwagon, let alone figure out a way to publicise using the technology.

I was following up Lisa Ray, an established Bollywood actress, on her personal blog, she’d tagged as the Yellow Diary blog. The post that really got my attention was where she came out as saying that she had an incurable form of Multiple Myeloma cancer. I was hooked to the blog after that and wanted to know more of what going on in her life. Interestingly enough I ended up looking for answers on Twitter and there she was on Twitter as well. That whole day, I searched through the Twitter directory to search for who else is online and astonishingly enough almost every Bollywood star was up there (with an exception of a few).

Bollywood is finally grasping the mammoth dynamics of using Twitter

Relationship Dynamics

Once you end up on a Twitter page for a certain star, it’s just as easy to see who the star has on speed dial. Check whom the star is following and an even bigger picture of inner Bollywood relationship dynamics comes into play. Recently enough, many a journalist have ventured into these Twitter profiles and assembled presumptions of “who is related to who” purely following the followers.

Putting Twitter to good use

Actress Gul Panag wearing a t-shirt saying, "Have you been Gul'd yet?" and her Twitter profile address follows.

Actress Lara Dutta fell ill, director Mahesh Bhatt came out as quite a poetic personality and playback singer Shreya Ghoshal thinks the movie “Day After Tomorrow” is scary. These tweets might be personal but they aren’t worth the time for these Bollywood powerhouses. Half the world is following them, these stars still haven’t figured out how to bank on the benefits of using real-time social networking. However, there seems to be a few individual that seem to have grasped the true potential of Twitter.

One worth mentioning is actress Gul Panag. Recently, she was asked by the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week to be their tweeting brand ambassador, so to say. She was asked to tweet a minute-by-minute description of what happened in the fashion shows that she was then invited to and posted pictures from her mobile phone’s built-in camera. This personal approach to interactions with a worldwide audience and fashion enthusiasts not only brought the recent fashion events into a spotlight but also gave a boost to the actresses followers. Overnight she had amassed followers in the tens of thousands.

London Dreams : Khuli Ankh Ka Sapna

The dope is that the premise of the movie is based on Abhimaan, except that instead of a couple we have two friends. Ajay and Sallu are both friends in different parts of the world. While Ajay, just as BigB, is popular in London as a singer of a band, Sallu plays at weddings in his hometown. But Sallu, just as Jaya Bachchan, was much more talented than Ajay.

And Ajay makes the mistake of inviting Salman to join his band. What happens next? Salman is an instant hit and a crowd puller; and nobody wants Ajay anymore. Ajay is consumed by this jealousy and big ego hurdle. He plans a vice to cut down Salman’s grwoing stature. He pushes Salman into hedonistic liefstyle with booze and babes, just before a crucial concert.

While the troop movies from Paris to Amsterdam and other places, Salman slides further into this couldron of sleaze. Will he recover? Even if he does, will Ajay realise his follies? Will Salman forgive Ajay and will their friendship hold them together?

That’s what the movie is about. Oh! I missed out on Asin. She is the lead dancer of the band. Ajay loves her, but she falls for the rural innocence of Salman Khan. That adds to Ajay’s woes, first Sallu steals his limelight and then his ladlylove. So, who finally wins over Asin!

Kylie gets in the business

Bollywood’s minor role … just $1 million.

Kylie Minogue-Australian Gay Icon- was reportedly paid $1 million for her appearance in the $25 million Blue Bollywood film released in India on Friday night.’The producers have made much of the participation of Minogue, apparently hoping to distance their film from Bollywood’s traditional kitsch romances and bombastic potboilers,” a reviewer wrote in The Times of London.

”However, Minogue plays only a cameo part. Her main contribution comes in Chiggy Wiggy, a song produced in collaboration with A. R. Rahman, the Indian composer known as the ‘Mozart of Madras’, who won an Oscar for a song on the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack.”The film is based on a scuba-diving storyline, with some of the action taking place underwater.

Acid Factory Movie Review

Non-Acidic Leakage

Ratings: - * * * ½

A novel concept of group Amnesia, a fast and innovative narrative, sleek presentation, up to the mark technical aspects and some perfect performances make Suparn Verma’s Acid Factory one of the few impressive modern thrillers to have come from Bollywood. The above mentioned factors even manage to overshadow a clear flaw in the climax.

The plot takes place inside a locked acid factory where six people suddenly wake up realizing they can’t remember a thing about themselves or the situation they are thrown into. Soon, they realize they have become temporarily amnesic due to a gas leak in the factory. Thus starts their quest to understand the situation and most importantly, find their own identity.

The narrative, over here, becomes a vital streak where the flashback and the current events are presented in a manner that fixes your attention to the screen throughout. Director Suparn Verma has come a long way since Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena. Not only does he manage to narrate the unusual story with maturity, but he also succeeds in giving opportunity to all the actors to display their abilities. Verma is blessed with a tight and crisp script.

The subject demands high quality cinematography and background score. Sahil Kapoor and Amar Mohile fulfill the demand with perfection coupled with some breathtaking action by the veteran Tinu Verma.

The long line-up of the cast puts you in a dilemma of sorts as to who was the best among them as each one (Fardeen Khan, Aftab Shivdasani Danny Dengzongpa, Irrfan Khan, Manoj Bajpai, Dino Morea and Dia Mirza) plays its part with maturity. It won’t be an understatement to term this as Aftab, Dino and Dia’s one of the best performances till date, if not the best. Though there’s hardly any scope for music, Shamir Tondon’s composition Yeh Jism suits the mood of the movie and has some superb lyrics.

Now what stops Acid Factory from being a truly excellent adventure is a key flaw in the final act. The writers and the director should have thought about it. Also too many car explosion scenes could have been avoided. However, in spite of that, Acid Factory turns out to be an enjoyable experience because of the plus points already mentioned.

From the box-office point of view, the film has had a below average opening, which will make sure it succumbs once the three most awaited Diwali releases (Blue, All The Best and Main Aurr Mrs Khanna) arrive next week. As it is, there’s hardly an audience in India for such dark thrillers.

A Thursday

Why is October 12 so special for me? (No… it’s not my birthday and I am still single)

October 12… sounds like an ordinary date doesn’t it? But for me, it’s worth a thousand smiles. Something happened on this day which I so dearly wanted to happen since my childhood. I am sure many would consider my excitement as over the top but I can’t help. Three years back, I finally saw him in real and spoke with him (not her by any means). And before you start thinking, God knows what, let me come to the point and stop your weird imaginations. It was the day when I met the great Baadshah of Bollywood – Shah Rukh Khan!

I and my classmates, who were completing PG Diploma in Journalism, were sent by our college (K C College of Management Studies) to a talk show on NDTV show where SRK was the guest. I clearly remember how desperate I was to put in my name in the list of those who were interesting in attending the show. Thus began my wait for that Thursday, which finally arrived. After we reached Mehboob Studio for more than an hour, King Khan finally arrived dressed in a shirt and blue jeans. I could hardly believe my eyes and luck.

Pranab Roy, the host, quickly began the show. As Shah Rukh started answering questions on his daily life, we soon came to know how down to earth he is. We were all pleasantly surprised to see the biggest star behaving in the most simplest of manners just like any other common man. The show began to progress and so did King Khan’s friendliness with us. Also we were awestruck by his witty humor.

In between he also gave attitude tips in a totally non-preaching manner. It’s after listening to one of his tips that I have started doing every small activity with utmost dedication. SRK had said, “Even if you are just brushing your teeth you should brush it in such a way as if it is the last time you are getting a chance to do so.” Initially I wasn’t sure of this but still gave it a try few days after the show and today I am still enjoying doing every small activity enthusiasm.

Later in the show, selected few got a chance to ask Shah Rukh a question and of course I was one of them. While all were desperately pleading for the mike with all excitement, I just politely signaled Roy for a chance and it paid off. If there was a moment where calmness scored over desperation, this was one!

As I tried asking a question to SRK, I could feel my hand shaking, heartbeat thumping and my breath going irregular. I asked, “Are you looking forward to becoming a director ever?” and he answered humorously, “Yes, maybe after 4-5 years when nobody will give me work.” I won’t explain my reaction after this cameo of a talk with him because I will never be able to do so! And lastly, we broke the rules of the organizers and ran on the stage. Needless to say I was one of them. I can still feel his handshake.

The show ended as Shah Rukh Khan danced with few members from the audience. And this time, I, being the worst dancer in the world, was happy sitting in the audience as I had no intentions of making a fool of myself on national television! Thus, the show ended and so did one of the best moments of my life.

When my course ended, majority of my classmates felt the money spent on the fees wasn’t worth. In fact, almost all of them felt that… except me. Those few hours spent inside Mehboob studio never allowed me to feel that way.

I believe you, Sid

I can’t help signing off today without writing a post on Wake up Sid, a film my family and I thoroughly enjoyed yesterday.

My wife came away misty-eyed remembering her days as a young journalist on a house hunt in Kolkata and its incumbent inconveniences and I couldn’t but reflect on how my own life has panned out thus far. My kids instantly identified with both Siddharth — a name they connected to — and Sid, a character they are convinced is real.

My compliments to its makers for giving us a convincing story. Easily, they could have gone over the top and created an eminently forgettable, run-of-the-mill din. Moderation makes this flick click.

The principal character, for instance, is carefree and does not have a bother in the world. By his admission, he specialises in blowing his father’s cash. He lazes around, whiles away hours between a reclining chair and a cushy bed, sets a midnight alarm and does nothing when it goes off, gives a sad account of himself in examinations and can’t make head or tail of accountancy.

Yet, there is something lovable about him, he isn’t a junkie, is not shown doing drugs, doesn’t light up at the drop of a hat, screams at his parents — mother in particular — but is still deferential. Shuts up when his father asks him to and stomps out of home.

His relationship with the other lead actor (Konkona Sen Sharma) is realistic. He moves in with her, describes her as a friend, sleeps in a bag beside her. But there is no sexual overture from either party. There are real people like Sid and Aisha who share, learn from each other and hold one another’s hands.

The film has an absolutely lovable girl, who agonises over her ever growing girth and uses her daily battle of the bulge to drive home a point. Sid fails in his exams and is distraught, wallowing in self pity. She silences Sid telling him of her daily conflict which she routinely keeps losing. Yet, she keeps at it. Those of us who have an issue with unwanted adipose will find this very believable.

Anupam Kher essays a cameo with his understated acting. A father who isn’t terribly loud with what he feels of his good-for-nothing son, but in his subliminal way tries to make a responsible creature of him. Even when he has an angry exchange with his lazy ward, he isn’t theatrical.

Konkona Sen Sharma is known to be a class actor, but Ranbir Kapoor is a revelation. He gets under the skin of the character, first portraying a Sid who is irresponsible, a baby-faced monster forever littering and griping constantly being reminded by circumstances that life isn’t necessarily fun. He is forced to hunt an identity of his own.

As he becomes a man and his tenor changes, the new Sid is visible different. There is mature resolve in his voice. Yet, there isn’t any machismo. He remains chocolate faced, but his eyes are sensitive and caring. He cooks and washes for his housemate, learns what to do with eggs and puts an end to his clumsy, gross life. The writer skillfully creates situations to dictate his storyboard. The film ends poignantly with Sid and Aisha in a clasp in driving Mumbai rain. It doesn’t drag beyond that.

In this day and age of overstatements, it subtly stands out.
